The head of the Syrian delegation to the talks of Astana II (Kazakhstan) survived after an assassination attempt. The Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations, dr Bashar al Jafari survived an assassination attempt in Astana where yesterday began the preliminary meetings. The Russian secret services succeeded in preventing at the last moment an attack by a suicide bomber carrying an explosive belt, ready to detonate the mechanism. Russian counter-espionage discovered the terrorist cell that would handle the kamikaze’s action. The latter was located near the secure entrance intended only for the members of the Russian-Iranian-Syrian alliance delegations, close to the Office of Security Services. The terrorist was dressed in a police uniform and was waiting the arrival of the Syrian Ambassador by this securised entrance. . He was waiting to approach him and detonate the explosive mechanism by dragging the Syrian ambassador to death.

The Russian counter-espionage have even dislocated five members of the terrorist cell which directed the suicide bomber and according to the first informations, they belong to the Islamic state (Daesh). They are all arrested and detained. The terrorist who was about to carry out the suicide bombing has already confessed by pleading guilty.

On the other hand, the Russian secret services have asked to the competent authorities of Kazakhstan the permission to investigate the members of the terrorist organization in Russian territory. Hence the investigation will be conducted with the participation of their Kazakh counterparts. They must complete the investigation by identifying the terrorist networks that cooperated in the (failed) attack and see their implementation in this criminal act.

This event, which could have tragic consequences on both the political and military levels, has raised great concerns in Russia and Kazakhstan as the two countries wonder how these dangerous terrorists were able to obtain ordinary passports. According to leaks by Russian sources, the terrorists departed from Syria, went to Iraq and from Irak passed to Jordan from where using their passports arrived in Moscow. From the capital of the Russian Federation, they traveled to Astana. The five arrested terrorists were subjected to hard and thorough interrogations because the Russians are mainly interested in knowing their contacts in the Federation and in Kazakhstan and in second place to know their links in Iraq, Syria and Jordan. Computers and satellite telephones belonging to the terrorist network have been seized and are supposed to provide satisfactory answers. These devices are also transported to Russia with the approval of Kazakhstan. addiyar 15.2.17 and other sources
